The agency notes that Milos Vucevic has become the first high-ranking official to lose his position following widespread protests across the country.
"I took this step to reduce tensions. The mayor of Novi Sad will also resign. With this, we have met all the demands of the most radical protesters.", he stated during a press conference on Tuesday, January 28.
As is known, Vucevic has led the ruling center-right Progressive Party of Serbia since 2023.
It's worth mentioning that anti-government demonstrations erupted after the roof of a train station in Novi Sad collapsed in November 2024, resulting in 15 fatalities. Protesters blame corruption in the government of populist President Aleksandar Vucic for the disaster.
Recall that on New Year's Eve, students in Serbia took to the streets in protest. They demanded the release of the full documentation regarding the tragedy in Novi Sad.
Additionally, people are gathering for protests in Slovakia. On January 23, various cities in the country saw the start of a protest action against Prime Minister Robert Fico's government.
And on January 6, the opposition in Georgia held a Christmas march. This was yet another demonstration by supporters of the country's European integration.
