Recently, there was a leak in the "Druzhba" oil pipeline in the area near the city of Pniewy in western Poland. The pipeline has currently been shut down.
This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing the pipeline operator PERN.
The operator's press service noted that pumping at the damaged section was immediately halted, and the oil was redirected through another section of the pipeline.
Emergency services from PERN and the State Fire Service were dispatched to the site of the incident.
PERN stated that the causes of the leak are unknown and will be investigated by an internal commission. It is known that the section where the leak occurred supplied oil to a refinery in Germany.
The "Druzhba" pipeline is significant due to its scale and impact on Europe's energy security. In particular, "Druzhba" has facilitated the transportation of large volumes of Russian oil to European countries. This system is a primary source of oil supply for Hungary and Slovakia.
It is also worth noting that Russia has used "Druzhba" as a political lever in its relations with the EU, Ukraine, and Belarus.
However, due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and EU sanctions, the significance of "Druzhba" is diminishing. Nevertheless, the pipeline still holds importance, particularly for Hungary.
