NATO is unlikely to heed Ukraine's demand for an urgent invitation to join the Alliance during the meeting on December 3. This would be a significant setback for Kyiv's plans as it anticipates the return of Donald Trump to the White House.
This information was reported by Reuters. The publication reminded that Ukraine's Minister of Foreign Affairs Andriy Sibiga sent a letter to NATO urging it to provide an invitation to Ukraine as soon as possible.
However, sources speaking on condition of anonymity indicated that there is no necessary consensus among the 32 NATO members to make this decision. Moreover, given the sentiments among the Alliance members, it will take too long to create conditions for agreement.
"Achieving consensus will take weeks and months. I do not think this will happen tomorrow; I would be very surprised," admitted one of the Alliance officials.
One American official stated that the meeting will focus on "support" rather than resolving the invitation issue for Ukraine. According to him, NATO will aim to ensure that Ukraine is in a "strong position" during negotiations – and to achieve this, the American claimed it is necessary to "increase funding, armament, and mobilization."
It should be noted that yet another disregard of Ukraine's demand is likely to provoke a wave of outrage among the Ukrainian public, who are tired of the "muddling through" every time the topic of Ukraine's membership arises. Furthermore, the endless promises and phrases about "open doors" are increasingly irritating not only ordinary citizens but also the Ukrainian government.
Previously, "Telegraph" reported that Ukraine would like to receive an invitation to NATO membership. This should happen before Joseph Biden leaves the White House, as it would be a worthy legacy for the U.S. president.
President Volodymyr Zelensky recently stated that Ukraine will never recognize its temporarily occupied territories as part of Russia. Therefore, the option of joining NATO in parts is not being considered. In exchange for NATO membership, Ukraine is only willing to cease hostilities against Russian occupiers, but nothing more.
Meanwhile, Western media exhibit the foresight that is lacking among Western politicians, reporting that Ukraine must become a member of the North Atlantic Alliance, as this is one of the guarantees of its protection against further attempts by the Russian regime to start a new war. Additionally, Ukraine's accession to NATO would bring numerous benefits to both the Alliance and Ukraine, as well as to U.S. President Donald Trump.
