Border guards from the State Border Service of Lithuania discovered a 25-meter underground tunnel at the border with Belarus, which may have been used for smuggling.
This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing LRT.
According to border guard representative Gedrius Misutis, the tunnel was found near the village of Pasvalys in Lithuania.
"Since a pre-trial investigation has been initiated, we are coordinating all details with the prosecutor's office. We will soon publish a report with all the specifics," he assured.
It is worth noting that Lithuania has established a physical barrier at the border with Belarus. This has made it significantly more difficult for smugglers to carry out illegal activities. Nevertheless, they are finding new methods of smuggling, such as using weather balloons or tunnels.
Earlier, we reported that in 2023, Lithuania announced its intention to construct an additional barrier on the border with Belarus and Russia extending for hundreds of kilometers.
Additionally, last year, the Lithuanian Department of State Security stated that the sharp increase in the flow of immigrants from Belarus to Lithuania poses additional threats and risks to the national security of the country.
The country's parliament has also prohibited the issuance of new visas for citizens of Russia and Belarus.
