Amid Trump's interest, Greenland unexpectedly announced general elections, raising questions about the issues that will be on the ballot.

The electoral campaign is anticipated to focus on Greenland's aspiration for independence.
На фоне интереса Трампа в Гренландии неожиданно объявили о проведении всеобщих выборов, на которых будут решаться важные вопросы.

Greenland, which unexpectedly found itself at the center of global attention due to Donald Trump's desire to gain control over it, will hold general elections on March 11. The voting will take place nearly a month earlier than the legally stipulated deadline.

This is reported by The Guardian. The upcoming election campaign is expected to focus on Greenland's aspiration for independence, the development of the island's fragile economy, and its relationships with Denmark and the United States.

"We are in the midst of a serious time. A time we have never experienced in our country. Now is not the time for internal division," stated Mute Egede, the Prime Minister of the autonomous territory of Denmark.

It is noted that Trump himself was not mentioned in Egede's speech.

For reference: Denmark ruled the island for centuries. Greenland was a Danish colony until 1953 and has since gained considerable autonomy, including the right to declare independence if such a desire is supported by the results of a referendum, although Copenhagen still oversees Greenland's security and foreign policy. The island has vast untapped mineral resources, but its economy relies on fishing and annual grants from Denmark.

Interestingly, according to one of the latest polls conducted by Verian on behalf of the Danish newspaper Berlingske and the Greenlandic daily Sermitsiaq, the majority of Greenlanders would vote for independence if such a referendum were held now. About 28% stated they would vote against independence.

As a reminder, earlier "Telegraph" explored what is currently happening around Greenland and whether Denmark has any chances.
