A federal judge in the United States has temporarily suspended President Donald Trump's order that aimed to eliminate automatic citizenship for children born in the country. This was reported by CNN, as noted by UNN.
Details
On Wednesday, February 5, federal judge Deborah Boardman blocked President Donald Trump's directive intended to revoke birthright citizenship.
The judge described Trump's order as likely unconstitutional and one that "contradicts a 250-year tradition of granting citizenship by birth." According to her, the order violates the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, Supreme Court precedents, and historical principles of citizenship in the United States.
A lawsuit was filed in Maryland by five pregnant women whose children could be affected by this order, along with two civil rights organizations.
Legal experts suggest that this case may ultimately reach the Supreme Court. The Trump administration is likely to appeal the decision in the appellate court.
Recall
On January 23, federal judge John Coogler imposed a 14-day ban on the enforcement of Trump's order limiting American citizenship by birthright. The judge called the order "clearly unconstitutional" and granted the request of the Attorney General of Washington.
