Today, the European Union decided to extend sanctions against the Russian Federation for another six months. Zelensky expressed gratitude for this during his conversation with Costa. He also added that there is a need to continue applying pressure on Putin, as sanctions are an effective tool.
"I would like to discuss with you how to strengthen this sanctions pressure," noted Volodymyr Zelensky.
The main topic of the meeting was the anticipated 16th package of EU sanctions against Russia. Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine hopes for strong decisions. Furthermore, military assistance was also discussed. Zelensky and Costa talked about potential funding sources for the production of Ukrainian weapons, particularly through the use of frozen Russian assets.
The politicians also discussed preparations for an informal meeting of EU leaders, which will take place at Costa's initiative on February 3.
"Ukraine is counting on the launch of new strong initiatives for ammunition supplies at this meeting," stated the Office of the President.
Volodymyr Zelensky added that Ukraine expects Europe to become a full participant in negotiations for restoring a just peace. António Costa emphasized that a lasting peace is needed not only for Ukraine but for all of Europe.
"We will stand by you for as long as necessary," noted the President of the European Council.
