Downing of a Russian Missile with APKWS

As noted by the Navy, the X-59 missile was destroyed by the crew of one of the boats. Judging by the video, it is likely that the enemy target was shot down using APKWS. This marks the first public instance of such an operation. Previously, the Navy demonstrated how Vampire missile systems equipped with APKWS intercepted enemy drones.

What is Known About the APKWS System

APKWS (Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System) is a precision-guided weapon. It combines unguided 70-mm Hydra 70 rockets with a semi-active laser guidance unit. Germany first supplied such missiles to Ukraine in 2022.

APKWS missiles are used in Vampire missile systems. A total of 14 such systems were ordered for the Ukrainian army. It took about six months to deliver the first four installations.

Recall that Ukrainian defenders shot down most of the drones used by Russians to attack cities on the night of January 26. More than 70 aerial targets were launched in total.

Ukrainian military forces attacked the Ryazan Oil Refinery on the night of January 26. As a result of the latest attack, a fire broke out at the site.
