Yoon Suk Yeol, amid a struggle against the opposition in early December 2024, unsuccessfully attempted to declare martial law in South Korea, after which the parliament impeached him and accused him of attempting a coup.
As noted by the agency, the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials attempted to detain Yoon after the president repeatedly ignored summons to appear for questioning. Investigators abandoned their first attempt to arrest him on January 3 after nearly six hours of standoff due to resistance from Yoon's security detail.
Yoon's arrest marks the first time in the country's history that a president has been taken into custody. Investigators can now hold the president for 48 hours and are likely to interrogate him at their office in Gwacheon, near Seoul.
Recall that ten days ago, thousands of people gathered for a rally in Seoul to express their opinions "for" and "against" the arrest of the impeached South Korean president. Recently, he was to be arrested, but security prevented this from happening.
Earlier, South Korean media reported on the casualties of North Korea in the Kursk region. As of January 13, about 300 North Korean soldiers have died.
