The agency notes that Miloš Vučević has become the first high-ranking official to lose his position following widespread protests across the country.
"I took this step to reduce tension. The mayor of Novi Sad will also resign. This satisfies all the demands of the most radical protesters", he stated during a press conference on Tuesday, January 28.
As is known, Vučević has led the ruling center-right Progressive Party of Serbia since 2023.
Incidentally, anti-government demonstrations erupted after the roof of a train station in Novi Sad collapsed in November 2024, resulting in 15 fatalities. Protesters blame the corruption of populist President Aleksandar Vučić for the tragedy.
Recall that on New Year's Eve, students in Serbia took to the streets. They demanded the release of all documentation regarding the tragedy in Novi Sad.
Moreover, people are gathering for protests in Slovakia as well. On January 23, in various cities across the country, protests began against the government of Prime Minister Robert Fico.
And on January 6, the opposition in Georgia held a Christmas march. This is yet another protest by supporters of the country's European integration.
