Romania's president resigns: why this is bad news for Ukraine.

Far-right parties are making a third attempt to initiate impeachment.
Президент Румынии подал в отставку: какие негативные последствия это может иметь для Украины.

The political instability in Romania has resulted in the resignation of the president. The head of state, Klaus Iohannis, announced on Monday that he will step down from his position on February 12.

This was reported by Romania Insider. Prior to this, the parliament had attempted to initiate impeachment proceedings three times, raising concerns about the emergence of a political crisis.

"To free Romania and its citizens from this crisis, I am resigning from the presidency of Romania. I will leave my post the day after tomorrow, on February 12," Iohannis stated.

As is known, the first round of presidential elections took place in Romania at the end of November last year, where Kelin Georgescu emerged victorious. The politician, known for his openly pro-Russian views, was not expected to receive even a few percent of the vote according to polls, leading to suspicions of large-scale Russian interference in the electoral process. It was reported that Russians conducted an extensive propaganda campaign through the TikTok platform.

In early December, the court annulled the election results, and repeat elections were scheduled for May 2025.

The call for the president's resignation is primarily supported by the far-right "Youth Party" (PM), from which Georgescu was nominated, the "Alliance for the Union of Romanians" (ASR), and SOS. PM and SOS are characterized by pro-Russian views, while ASR holds a Euroskeptic position.

They have collected signatures twice to initiate impeachment proceedings, but lacked sufficient votes.

In a third attempt, the right-wing parties were joined by deputies from the pro-European and pro-Ukrainian "Union for the Salvation of Romania," who argue that Iohannis' continued presidency after his mandate contradicts democratic principles and exacerbates political instability.

It is known that Romania has significantly aided Ukraine economically and with weaponry since the onset of the Russian invasion. For instance, it is one of the few countries that agreed to transfer Patriot air defense systems. Additionally, Romania is assisting with exports, including in the "Grain from Ukraine" initiative.

It is worth noting that Georgescu referred to Ukraine as a fictitious state. He claimed that its division among neighboring countries is inevitable.
